TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Police have arrested a suspect they had been pursuing since an officer-involved shooting in midtown Tucson on Monday, May 14.

The Tucson Police Department said Paul Elliott Irvin, 48, was wanted on a charge of aggravated assault of a police officer. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries after his arrest. According to TPD on Tuesday, May 15 he was released from the hospital and has been booked into the Pima County Jail. 

According to police, Irvin was found at a bus bench near South Alvernon Way and East 29th Street. When they tried to apprehend him, he fled on foot and was struck by a police vehicle. 

Police said Irvin had a gun with him.

According to the Arizona Department of Correction, Irvin has a criminal history that includes prison stays for criminal damage and weapons charges.

The TPD said the shooting happened around 3 a.m. near East Blacklidge Drive and North Tucson Boulevard.

The incident began when officers tried to pull over Irvin, who has an active felony warrant for a drug offense.

The TPD said Irvin pulled over, but fled the scene.

As officers began chasing him, he and officers exchanged gunfire.  According to a TPD news release, the officer involved in the shooting was Officer Matthew Powell, a nine and a half-year veteran.

Nearby Cragin Elementary School was closed Monday because of the police activity. The school was expected to be open on Tuesday.

No officers were injured in the shooting. It was not known if Irvin was injured in the shooting.
