by John Q Public Safety
According to an August 31, 2017 article in the Arizona Republic, in 2016 El Mirage ranked 5th in per capita crime for those cities in the metro Phoenix area with populations larger than 25,000. El Mirage has 34 crimes per 1,000 residents despite the cities immediately to the east and west having significantly lower per capita crime rate.  Surprise, to the west of El Mirage has 21 crimes per 1,000.  Peoria to the east of El Mirage has 25 crimes per 1,000. AzPSC - El Mirage - Jones Questions

by John Q Public Safety
As we reported last week, the El Mirage City Council held a special council meeting on Thursday August 17th to consider a replacement council-member for the position vacated by the passing of Vice Mayor Ramirez. In that same report we asked Councilman Bob Jones to put the council, and the City of El Mirage, back on track by supporting Anita Norton as the replacement. Instead, Jones supported the alternative, the council vote was deadlocked three to three and there is still no replacement. According to a message on the Arizona Public Safety Coalition (AzPSC) Tipline, El Mirage Councilman Bob Jones […]

How Does The City of El Mirage Recover From the Past War on Cops?

by John Q Public Safety
At a special council meeting on Thursday August 17th, the El Mirage City Council will consider a replacement council member for the current open position vacated from the untimely passing of Vice Mayor Ramirez.  Councilman Bob Jones is the only member from the Mayor’s slim majority who has shown any interest in finding the facts.  Will Councilman Bob Jones be the deciding vote to putting the council back on track? El Mirage leadership has waged a long war against its police force.  And it’s not just been a war on cops, it’s been a war on all public safety personnel […]

El Mirage Police Campaign UPDATE!

by John Q Public Safety
Our team has been busy fact checking the many tips coming into the AZPSC Tip Line. Some that have been checked and verified include a survey from the El Mirage Police Officers Association revealing some troubling statistics and Police Officer firearm training being denied to them. Here are the latest issues.. Issue #1 Council and Manager Compromising Public Safety.. During the May 16, 2017 El Mirage City Council meeting the El Mirage Police Employee’s Association submitted a survey of 30 El Mirage Police Officers to the council. The results of the survey demonstrate an overwhelming dissatisfaction with city management and […]

El Mirage Police Campaign – Issue #2

by John Q Public Safety
To protect residents and themselves, a police officer must be prepared for the most unpredictable and violent of scenarios.  Officer preparation includes having access to the right tools and training. After the U.S. Department of Labor ruled that the City of El Mirage had violated Federal Law by giving officers a one-time bonus that withheld earnings from overtime, police firearms training ceased. In a smaller police department like El Mirage, overtime is necessary for training and to maintain minimum staffing. Officers and citizens alike are placed in jeopardy and city liability is increased exponentially, when staffing falls below proper standards. […]

El Mirage Police Campaign – Issue #1

by John Q Public Safety
During the May 16, 2017 El Mirage City Council meeting the El Mirage Police Employee’s Association submitted a survey of 30 El Mirage Police Officers to the council.  The results of the survey demonstrate an overwhelming dissatisfaction with city management and officer morale described as, “Horrible, hard to work under current conditions.” Over the next week, the Arizona Public Safety Coalition (AzPSC) will illustrate some of the concerns from El Mirage officers and residents.  Until then, please consider some of the results from the survey – When officers were asked to consider the 2017-2018 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that dictates […]

AzPSC Begins Campaign to Support El Mirage Police

by John Q Public Safety
After launching the AzPSC Tip Line, we received several reports and the most interesting were about the increasingly poor public safety conditions in the West Valley city of El Mirage. Information received thus far indicates the conditions are a product of the mayor, two current council members and the city manager, who make poor policy decisions and are responsible for financial mismanagement. Evidence clearly indicates Mayor Lana Mook and a slim majority of council members have ignored the incompetence of City Manager Spencer Isom. Matters of legal and ethical concern have been raised in multiple areas of the city’s business. […]

Tension Rises Between El Mirage Police Association, City

by AZPSC News Feed
By  Matthew Casey Published: Monday, May 22, 2017 – 5:00am Updated: Monday, May 22, 2017 – 5:05am A high-ranking member of the El Mirage Police Employees Association has accused city leaders of breaking Arizona’s open meeting law, an allegation the city manager called “absurd.” The conflict grew out of a survey of association members. Results of the survey were sent to the City Council before the May 16 regular meeting. The idea was to help open communication about the group’s concerns on training, attrition and pay, said Norm Brice, vice president of EMPEA. “Instead, they violated the state’s open meeting […]
