Sex abuse probe after coma patient has baby

by AZPSC News Feed

PHOENIX, Ariz. – A woman in a vegetative state for at least 14 years has given birth to a baby, now Arizona police and investigators are trying to figure out how it happened.

A source close to the case who asked to remain anonymous told KPHO-TV that whoever did it took advantage of someone with absolutely no way to defend herself.

“None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth,” the source said. “From what I’ve been told, she was moaning. They didn’t know what was wrong with her. There was a nurse that was there, and from what I’ve heard, she’s the one that delivered the baby.”

Adult Protective Services dispatched a team to conduct health and safety checks on all patients living at Hacienda Healthcare.

The Arizona Department of Health says they are actively working with law enforcement in their criminal investigation.

No suspects have been named at this point.

The source says the facility changed their protocols for dealing with patients just this week.

“I was told that as of now, if a male staff member needs to enter a female’s room, that they need to bring a female employee with them.”

In a statement, Hacienda Healthcare says they have had an outstanding reputation for 15 years and cannot comment on any patient due to federal and state privacy laws.
