Police department in northern Arizona will equip guns with cameras for officers | Arizona News

by dbaker@azfamily.com (David Baker)
WILLIAMS, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) – A police department in northern Arizona is using new technology to record actions by its officers. The Williams Police Department, which is just west of Flagstaff, has teamed up with Viridian Weapon Technologies for weapon-mounted cameras for its officers. The cameras fit on the gun and holsters and records automatically, “providing an unobstructed view from the end of an officer’s firearm,” said Viridian Weapon Technologies. The department was one of the first in the country to evaluate the weapon-mounted cameras. It’s unclear how many officers will have the cameras on their guns. “We’ve seen the need […]

Kathy Hoffman Wins Race for Arizona Superintendent, AP Projects

Democrat Kathy Hoffman has won the race for Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, according to the Associated Press, beating Republican opponent Frank Riggs in the second major statewide win for an Arizona Democrat this election cycle. A first-time candidate and speech therapist, 32-year-old Hoffman has pulled off two stunning political upsets, first beating veteran politician David Schapira in the Democratic primary this summer, and then overtaking Riggs, a former California congressman well-versed in charter schools and education policy. Hoffman’s candidacy was propelled by the grassroots legion of educators who became politically motivated during the #RedForEd teachers’ strike this spring. For […]

DEM VICTORY IN ARIZONA: Republican McSally Concedes Senate Race To Democrat Sinema

by AZPSC News Feed
No, it wasn’t a blue wave. But a week after the voting, Democrats are riding higher than they thought on election night. As vote counting presses on in several states, the Democrats have steadily chalked up victories across the country, firming up their grip on the U.S. House of Representatives and statehouses. The slow roll of wins has given the party plenty to celebrate. President Donald Trump was quick to claim victory for his party on election night. But the Democrats, who hit political rock bottom just two years ago, have now picked up at least 32 seats in the […]

It takes razor-thin margins to get automatic recounts in Arizona elections | Local news

by AZPSC News Feed
PHOENIX — Any losing candidate in the general election who is counting on an automatic recount needs to come close to winning. In statewide races, there is a general law that requires a recount if the margin of votes between the two candidates is one-tenth of 1 percent. With perhaps 2.3 million votes already counted or yet to be tabulated in the race for U.S. Senate between Democrat Kyrsten Sinema and Republican Martha McSally, that would translate out to about 2,300 votes. The same law says a recount is based on the lesser of that 0.1 percent or 200 votes. […]
