Arizona Lawmaker Lifted Teacher Code of Ethics From Far-Right Group

The language of an Arizona legislator’s proposed educator code of ethics restricting teachers from engaging in political advocacy in the classroom was lifted from a campaign by a far-right organization. Representative Mark Finchem, a Republican from Oro Valley near Tucson, introduced HB 2002 last month. The nine points of Finchem’s proposed ethical code are identical to the proposed code of ethics from the Stop K-12 Indoctrination campaign, a project sponsored by the far-right, anti-Muslim David Horowitz Freedom Center. When Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally are officially sworn in Thursday, Arizona will find itself on a list that includes just over half of the states that have had female senators. Sinema, who won the November election, will be sworn in first becoming Arizona’s first female senator. McSally, who was appointed to fill John McCain’s seat after Jon Kyl resigned in December, will become Arizona’s junior senator. State Rep. Mark Finchem wants to ban public and charter school teachers from spreading “controversial” political, racial and religious messages in their classrooms. The Oro Valley Republican introduced House Bill 2002 in the Legislature last week. If it passes, teachers could face consequences as severe as losing their jobs for engaging in any “political, ideological or religious” advocacy or discussion with their students. The bill would mandate teachers follow a strict code of ethics and complete three hours of annual ethics training.
